URCHINS OF THE NIGHT

Distance is something that bands in this collective have always had to deal with. We collaborate with our friends in Boston, Syracuse, Buffalo....all sacrificing money, time and energy for the good of the project. We love doing this, so we make it work.

Urchins of the Night was a band that came out of Syracuse's We the People, a proposed Oi band that strayed from that genre pretty quickly. While singer Chuck Hickey stayed living in Syracuse, the rest of the members lived in Brooklyn, where they wrote the music and Chuck came down to record and add vocals. After several years of this process, the Brooklyn faction of We the People thought it might be cool to try something a little different.

Andy Williams, Jon Davies, Chris Swisher, and Jim Heffernan began thinking of a project where these four members wrote the music and provided vocals. What came out was a combination of influences, ranging from Husker Du, Blitz, the Wipers, and The Brigade. Three members also sang at different times, including the drummer, paying tribute to great drummer/singer bands as the Eagles, the Knack, Sir Lord Baltimore, and Genesis.

One release from this project came out in the spring of 2009. From the heavy reverb on the snare, to the guitar arrangement, Urchins was paying tribute to the bands of the 80's and 90's that inspired them, as well as making these songs contemporary with their own individual arrangement.

JIM HEFFERNAN

In the fall of 2010, Jim Heffernan decided to turn Rejouissance into a collaborative, heavier band with Jeff Walter, Matt St. Laurent, Mike Harriff, and Damian Vallelonga. They wanted to write new songs, collectively, and change the project.

Jim first played under his own name for the first time in the East Village Halloween weekend. He went on to write, record and release his first solo EP "The Distant Sound", comprised of stripped down versions of songs from rejouissance and urchins of the night.

In March of 2011, he completed "The Wall By the Ocean" EP, with all new original songs.
Jim is playing extensively in the North East, specifically New York, sharing bills with Henry Cluney from Stiff Little Fingers, Vinnie and Brendan from the Movie Life, and the Scarlet Ending.

Currently, Jim is working on a split 7 inch with Greg Macpherson as well as experimenting in a few movie soundtrack projects.

The first two EP's "The Distant Sound" and "The Wall By the Ocean" available now on itunes!

SEVER THE HANDS

In the Spring of 2004, Jim Heffernan, Jon Burns, and Damian Vallelonga began playing music together in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. While they all hailed from the same sunny land locked enclave of Onondaga County, Jim grew up in Manlius, Jon and Damian went to Nottingham. On a side note, go hornets. Guess who'se writing this bio.

While it took a practice or two to lock into who was playing what instrument (there was a rotating period where any one of them could've ended up the drummer, bass player or guitarist) they figured it out, and got writing. This was the first band, for all of them, that held extremely high importance on democratic creation. Song structure, arrangement, vocals, even lyrics were shared and worked on almost entirely in equal thirds. Their first release, under the name "Awake" also marked the second release from the newly founded and organized Banger Studios (the first recording project beng Us vs. Them). While the quality of the actual recording was raw, the songs themselves excited them, and pushed them on to embark on several North East tours. They changed their name to Sever the Hands for their second EP, and their last recording was completed just in time for their final shows in the winter of 2006.

Technically driven, Sever the Hands was a push for these musicians. A push to see where they could take their composition, their musicianship, and their work ethic. It was also a new challenge to combine influences, everything from Cap-N-Jazz, Bread and Circuits, Memento Mori, and His Heros Gone.

LADIES AND EVERYONE

Ladies & Everyone was an instrumental math rock band from Syracuse, NY. They started in late summer of 2003. Their influences ranged from
Progressive Rock to Jazz to Post Rock and Punk.

When combined, the resulting sound made them one of Syracuse's most unique & original bands. They wrote and played increasingly technical & challenging music all the way up till their untimely demise in the early fall of 2008.
